The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has obtained a custodial order from the Chief Magistrate’s Court at Kahawa Law Courts in Nairobi, allowing detectives to detain a suspect for 10 days as investigations into alleged hate speech and ethnic incitement intensify.

The respondent, Bare Sahara Ahmed, is currently being held at Kilimani Police Station. The detention period is intended to give investigators sufficient time to complete inquiries into the matter, which authorities say involves statements deemed capable of undermining national cohesion.

In its ruling, the court also granted permission for forensic examination of key digital evidence. This includes the analysis of call data records and financial transactions, which investigators believe may provide crucial insights into the context, reach, and potential coordination surrounding the alleged offences.

The DCI noted that the move reflects a firm commitment to enforcing the law and addressing conduct that poses a threat to peaceful coexistence among communities.

Authorities have further called on the public to exercise caution and responsibility in their communications, particularly on digital platforms, warning against the spread of messages that could incite division or hatred.

The case is expected to proceed once investigations are complete, with prosecutors likely to determine whether formal charges will be filed based on the evidence gathered.
