Labour Cabinet Secretary and Maendeleo Chap Chap Party leader, Dr. Alfred Mutua, has called on Kenyans to maintain peace and vote responsibly in tomorrow’s Mumbuni North Ward by-election in Machakos County.

Speaking ahead of the polls, CS Mutua stressed, “Voting or choosing your preferred candidate is not a matter of life and death. Let us maintain peace.” He warned against violence, chaos, and intimidation, adding, “The leaders people fight for today are the same ones who, tomorrow, sit together enjoying tea, while citizens suffer.”

Mutua urged voters to prioritize candidates with practical development plans. “Vote for someone whose agenda will improve your daily life—better roads, clean water, improved living standards, and job opportunities—not leaders who only offer hardline politics and empty slogans,” he said.

In a firm message to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Mutua demanded that all biometric systems and KIEMS kits function properly during the by-election.

“IEBC has been allocated significant resources. We cannot accept any failure of biometric systems or KIEMS kits,” he warned, citing reports of alleged ID purchases in some areas of Machakos.

He also condemned illegal night-time vote solicitation. “There are people sneaking into homes at night asking for votes. This is illegal, and it cannot continue,” Mutua said, recalling an incident where a man was badly beaten for trying to buy votes at 2 a.m.

CS Mutua’s appeals come as his party fields a candidate in the Mumbuni North Ward by-election, with the outcome expected to be closely watched as a test of electoral preparedness and citizen engagement.
