A 17-year-old student from Ikelenzu Secondary School tragically drowned on Sunday afternoon at the Uani River Dam near Kitondo Secondary School in Mbooni East, Makueni County.

The victim, identified as Mwendwa Mulandi, had travelled from Kangundo Sub-County in Machakos County to visit his maternal grandmother in Ndumbu Village, Mangani Sub-Location.

According to reports from residents, the incident occurred at around 3:00 pm when the teenager is believed to have been at the dam, though the circumstances surrounding the drowning remain unclear. Community members quickly responded to the distress and managed to retrieve the body from the water before notifying authorities.

Police officers from Mbumbuni Police Station arrived at the scene shortly thereafter and transported the body to Tawa Mortuary.

Investigations into the incident have been launched to establish the events leading to the tragic drowning. Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution around water bodies, especially during the current dry season when dams can be deceptively deep and unsafe.

The community has been left in shock as family members grapple with the sudden loss of the young student.
